DJC#025 – Let It Go: You Can’t Do It All Dads

What do a mid-week work trip, three-day weekend and a last minute family road trip have in common? A day late newsletter.

I want to do it all…and I can’t. The truth is that it was never possible before kids, it wasn’t possible as a stepdad and it’s still not possible with a six year old. Maybe you can relate?

That used to really frustrate me, and affect me in a negative way. I’m getting better at letting that idea go, and it has really helped me not carry that baggage around, ruin my day and rub off on my family.

Sure there’s times when better planning would have solved the problem, or staying up later/waking up earlier could have got the result we’re looking for. But sometimes we just didn’t see it soon enough, needed to catch up on sleep, and have to point the finger at life and carry on.

So as you’re trying to work on becoming a better version of yourself and a better Dad, know that you’ll need to make tough decisions (aka sacrifices) at times that will impact you personally because you cannot do it all. It’s impossible as a Dad…and in reality, it was before that little person came into your life.

I know I’d much rather have that experience with our son above than this newsletter sent out yesterday.

When you start feeling that frustration come on, try this: think about what Elsa from Frozen said. Let it go...

Until next Sunday, try practicing that.
